What is CANSLIM?
What is CANSLIM?
CANSLIM is William O'Neil's seven-letter checklist for picking growth-stock leaders, drawn from his study of the biggest winning stocks going back to the 1950s: Current quarterly earnings, Annual earnings growth, New (product, management, or price high), Supply and demand (float and volume), Leader (relative strength versus laggards), Institutional sponsorship, and Market direction. It is a framework for screening candidates, not a mechanical buy signal on its own; each letter narrows the search, and stocks meeting most or all seven criteria before their biggest moves were the exception, not the norm, among all listed stocks in O'Neil's own research.
The seven letters split naturally into fundamentals (C, A), structural and technical factors (N, S, L), and two conditions about who else is involved (I) and what the overall market is doing (M). O'Neil was explicit that M mattered more than any individual letter: in his own words, you can be right about a stock on every other factor and still lose money if the general market is heading down, because three out of four stocks get pulled along with it.
How CANSLIM maps to tickerstance
TickerStance does not track institutional 13F ownership (the I), but the other six letters each have a direct product surface. C and A, current and annual earnings acceleration, show up on the /fundamentals board by industry, and as the epsacc flag inside the tickerstance terminal's screen command for readers who want to filter individual names rather than browse by industry. N and S are covered by the strong recent IPOs and float and supply guides. L, leadership, shows up on the /leaders board, and as the rs>90 token inside that same terminal screen command. Stance covers M directly, not by forecasting where the market goes but by scoring the current regime daily, the way O'Neil meant the M to be read: what kind of market you are buying into today, not a prediction of tomorrow.
As of the July 20, 2026 close, Stance read 32.4, Caution, TickerStance's live answer to CANSLIM's M that day, with the dashboard's own guidance reading "selective only, tighter stops, smaller positions," the standard playbook for a Caution-band tape rather than a green light to chase breakouts.
